How We Find “Unfindable” Blockages Without Digging Up Your Garden

There’s a specific kind of dread that sets in when your toilet starts rising instead of draining, or when a heavy Melbourne downpour leaves your stormwater pipes gurgling like they’re gasping for air.
In the old days, fixing a mysterious backup meant a “search and destroy” mission. Plumbers would turn your backyard into a series of trenches, hoping to strike gold (or, in this case, a blocked pipe) before they hit your favourite rose bush. At X1 Plumb, we’ve moved past the “guess and dig” era. When it comes to blocked sewer and stormwater drains, we use a high-tech “surgical” approach to find the problem without the mess.
The Detective Work: Signs of a Deep Blockage
Before we even unload the van, we look for the symptoms that tell us where the system is failing. You can actually do a bit of this detective work yourself. If you suspect underground blockages, look for these three indicators:
The Sewer Struggle: If your floor wastes are overflowing or your toilet water levels are behaving strangely, the issue is likely in your sewer line—the pipe that carries blackwater away from your home.
The Stormwater Surge: If your gutters are overflowing during rain or you see water pooling around your downpipes, your stormwater drains—which handle rainwater—are the culprits.
The “Vapour Trail” Effect: Tree roots are smarter than we give them credit for. They can sense the microscopic “vapour trails” of moisture escaping from a tiny joint in a sewer or stormwater line. Once they find it, they’ll wedge their way in and expand, creating a massive underground “hairball” that stops everything in its tracks.
The Eyes Underground: CCTV Drain Cameras
We can’t fix what we can’t see, but we also don’t need to dig a hole to get a visual. The most powerful tool in our kit is the CCTV drain camera inspection. Instead of digging to find the blocked underground pipe, we feed a high-definition, flexible, and waterproof camera directly into the line.
We aren’t just looking for “stuff” in the way; we’re looking for the why. As the camera travels through the drain, it beams a live feed back to our monitors. We can see exactly what we’re up against: is it a clump of “flushable” wipes, a build-up of silt and debris in the stormwater, or a jagged tree root that has cracked the pipe casing?

Pinpoint Accuracy: The Ridgid Locator
Identifying what the blockage is only solves half the problem. We also need to know exactly where it is. This is where we use our Ridgid locator.
Our drain cameras are equipped with a “sonde”—a small transmitter inside the camera head. While the camera is sitting right at the face of the blockage, we use the Ridgid locator above ground to pick up that signal. It tells us the exact depth and position of the camera. This means if we do eventually have to perform a no-dig pipe repair or a targeted fix, we know exactly where to go. We’re talking about precision within centimetres, not meters.
The Cost of the “Wait and See” Approach
It’s tempting to just pour some chemicals down the drain and hope for the best. But as plumbers who’ve seen it all, we can tell you that ignoring a recurring blockage is a recipe for disaster. Besides, most store-bought cleaners are highly corrosive; if they don’t clear the blockage, they just sit in your pipes, eating away at the rubber seals or the pipe walls themselves. Plus, chemicals won’t do a thing against tree roots that are clogging your drains.
A blocked sewer can lead to raw sewage backing up into your home—a major health hazard. A blocked stormwater drain can cause water to seep under your house, leading to foundation movement and slab heave. By using line locating and camera tech early, we find the “unfindable” before it becomes an emergency.
Solving the Problem for Good
Once we’ve successfully pinpointed the location of the underground blockages, the final step isn’t always a shovel. Whether it’s high-pressure jetting to clear the debris or a no-dig pipe repair to seal a root-damaged joint, trust us to restore your home to a state of flow with as little “fuss” as possible.
Give us a call. Let’s see what’s actually going on down there—without the mess.
